Problem

Lung cancer screening rates remain critically low due to awareness gaps and accessibility challenges.

  • Less than 1% of eligible individuals get screened.

  • Limited clinic access in rural and underserved communities.

  • Mistrust in the healthcare system affects participation.

Solution

A mobile-first screening platform with self-assessment and digital outreach to increase early detection.

  • Eligibility Self-Check - A quick tool for users to assess their screening eligibility and get personalized guidance.

  • Mobile Clinic Finder - Make it easy to book a screening site.

  • Educational Outreach - digital outreach to raise awareness.

Key feature

Quickly determine if you qualify for lung cancer screening through a simple self-assessment. Answer a few questions to receive personalized guidance on your next steps, making early detection more accessible and efficient.

Eligibility Self-Check

Quickly find nearby screening unit stops, check availability, and book an appointment. Stay updated on real-time locations for easier access to lung cancer screening, making early detection more convenient.

Why This Matters?

Low screening rates are driven by multiple barriers, limiting access to early detection.

  • Socioeconomic inequities – Limited healthcare access and financial barriers prevent many from getting screened.

  • Health literacy gaps – Mistrust in the system and language barriers discourage participation.

  • Awareness challenges – Lack of outreach and education leads to missed screening opportunities.

Service Blueprint

We mapped the current lung cancer screening process in LA through research and interviews. Key barriers were identified to enhance accessibility and streamline patient experience.

Evolution of Design & Features

Low-Fi Progress

Design System Exploration

We initially explored a red-orange theme, but it felt too urgent for a healthcare app and the brand theme.

Based on user feedback, we switched to a blue-green palette, which better conveys trust, calmness, and professionalism, making the experience more approachable.

To ensure accessibility, we designed a fully web-based experience, eliminating the need for app downloads. This approach reduces friction, improves follow-through rates, and minimizes step fatigue, making it easier for users to complete their screening journey.

Beyond the App - Expanding Awareness

Family plays a crucial role in encouraging individuals to prioritize their health. Support from loved ones can reduce hesitation and increase screening participation. To reinforce this message, we designed multilingual posters and invitation letters, ensuring accessibility for diverse communities.

Family Centered Messaging

Connecting Awareness to Action

By integrating emotional messaging with accessible digital tools, we guide users from awareness to action. Our posters spark personal reflection, leading individuals to scan QR codes, check eligibility, and seamlessly book screening appointments.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

This project leverages digital solutions to bridge healthcare gaps, making lung cancer screening more accessible for underserved communities.

Through this experience, I deepened my understanding of healthcare equity, user-centered accessibility, and digital engagement strategies. With more time, I would further research diverse user groups, explore cultural and socioeconomic barriers, and analyze data trends to refine the solution.

Moving forward, I aim to continue designing for accessibility and creating meaningful change in healthcare.
